BRIEF MEMORY
FROM THE
CORAL CONTEST

Not only had Tolosa had an important choral tradition, at least since the times of Felipe Gorriti Osambela, but the rise of the Basque coral world between the 19th and early 20th centuries had placed us at the “spearhead” of the European choral world, being considered one of the characteristic signs of the cultural personality of the Basque people.

However, the Basque choral tradition could not be left out of the ravages of history that began after 1936 and marked the next 40 years. On the one hand the war, and on the other the Catholic Church, after being shaken by the earthquake that meant the Second Vatican Council.

It is this context in which some citizens of Tolosa, interested in promoting Tolosa, both in economic, social, and mainly cultural activities, are encouraged to create the CIT in 1967.

Since some of the members of the new association were linked to the musical life of the Villa, one of their first decisions was to launch a choral contest that pursues three objectives:

OUR OBJECTIVES

01. Recover, preserve and make known to the whole world the Basque folkloric repertoire

02. Promote and incorporate new creations in Basque language

03. Update the new choral literature among our choirs, and promote the formation of new directors and singers, following the most modern techniques

BEGINNING OF THE CONTEST

The first contest took place in 1969..

The following choirs participated in it:

  • Agrupación Coral Tafallesa (Tafalla-Navarre)
  • Coral “Andra Mari” (Rentería-Gipuzkoa)
  • Coral de Cámara de San Sebastián (Donostia-Gipuzkoa)
  • Coro de Tudela (Tutera-Navarre)
  • Coral Irunesa (Irún-Gipuzkoa)
  • Coral “Santa Cecilia” (Donostia-Gipuzkoa)
  • Coral “Lartaun” (Oiartzun-Gipuzkoa)
  • Coral “Oñatz” (Oinati-Gipuzkoa)
  • Agrupación Coral “Arraizpe” (Bilbo-Bizkaia)
  • Orfeón Olitense (Olite-Navarre)
  • Coral Estellesa (Estella-Navarre)
  • Coral “Santa Cecilia” (Villaba-Navarre)
  • Sociedad Coral de Miravalles (Miravalles-Bizkaia)
  • Coro “Biotz Alai” (Algorta-Bizkaia)
  • Coro Parroquial de Ntra. Sra. De los Desamparados (Gasteiz-Araba)
  • Coral “Zornoza” (Amorebieta-Bizkaia)
  • Agrupación Coral “Manuel Iradier” (Gasteiz-Araba).

At that time the choirs were all local, just missing a choir Iparralde, but this was corrected in the next edition, the 1970, with the participation of the Coral “Begiraleak” (Donibane Lohitzun-Lapurdi).

It will be in the 1971 edition when groups from other territories, all still from the Spanish state, will appear at the scenic stage of the contest.

It would be in the 5th edition of the contest, in 1973, when foreign choirs for the first time, there would be only two, “Chor Gemtschule Marktoberdorff” (Marktoberdorf-Germany) and “Coral Le Madrigal de Lyon” (Lyon-France).

In the following years, the contest will continue to bring more foreign choirs, always ensuring that they were of very good quality, but in a limited number due to the economic restrictions in which they moved. It will not be until the formation of the Basque Government, when thanks to their support we were able to give a good economic jump and a substantial quantitative and above all qualitative leap in attracting some of the best amateur and semi-professional choirs from around the world. Thus we could carry forward the old project with which the contest was born, and that could be synthesized in the old adage: “eman ta zabal zazu”.

The contest grows exponentially from 1988, when thanks to the Basque Government and the then Gipuzkoa Kutxa, and on the occasion of the 20th Anniversary of the Contest and the entrance in the European Community, we were able to carry out a contest that counted with the participation of choirs from most of the component countries of the European Community.

From that moment, the Choral Contest of Tolosa becomes an international reference of first order, being considered by many the most important annual choral event that was celebrated in the world.
