Rules of Competition

Mixed Voices Competition

The Centre of Initiatives of Tolosa, inside the 38 TOLOSA CHORAL CONTEST, organizes this contest according to the following Rules:

DATES

1–4 November Competition

5st of November Closing Act, with the obligatory participation of the awarded choirs in each modality.

PARTICIPANTS

1. In this Contest, choirs made up of a minimum of 20 singers and a maximum of 40 can participate. This competition is open to all amateur choirs. The amateur qualification does not concern the conductors of the choirs.

2. The participants have the obligation of being present during all the time the Contest lasts and they must be ready to cooperate in the “a cappella” concerts that will take place in the villages around.

MODALITIES AND PROGRAMME

3. The choirs must participate in the following Modalities:

a) Modality I: BASQUE SONG AND FOLKLORE

b) Modality II: POLYPHONY

4. MODALITY I: BASQUE SONG AND FOLKLORE

a) Obligatory rendering: "LORIAK UDAN" by David Azurza (1968) (.

b) A work of Popular Basque inspiration and words in Basque.

c) Folklore works from the choir’s country or area of origin of POPULAR CHARACTER. The use of popular instrumental accompaniment is allowed (NO PIANO).

The programme to be performed (including the obligatory score) will last, at least, 15 minutes and, at most, 18 minutes of real music time. The choir that does not respect these time limits will be penalized as it is said in point 15.

5. MODALITY II - POLYPHONY

a) Obligatory rendering: "EL AMOR Y LA LOCURA" by Alejando Yagüe (1947).

b) A song composed before 1800

c) A song composed between 1801 and 1980

d) A song composed after 1980

The programme to be performed (including the obligatory score) will last, at least, 15 minutes and, at most, 18 minutes of real music time. The choir that does not respect these time limits will be penalized as it is said in point 15.

7. The Organization will cover the lodging expenses (bed and meals) from the 31th of October to lunch of the 5st of November:

INSCRIPTIONS

8. Applications to take part in this Competition are now open. The closing date will be the 15th of May, 2006.

Applications will not be considered valid until the aforesaid Application Form has been duly fulfilled.

9. The conductor decides the order in which the works are to be performed. The Organization has to be informed of this order before September 15th, 2006. No changes will be admitted after this date.

10. Prized choirs must stay for the Closing Act and take part in it. The approximated duration of this Act is until 15:00 on the 5st of November.

JURY AND RESULT

11. The Jury will be made up of seven musical personalities from different countries. One month before the competition is due to take place the members of the Jury will be published.

12. The Jury base their decisions on the following characteristics:

13. Each member of the Jury will give up to 100 points for the global performance of each choir. Maximum and minimum scoring obtained by the choirs will be cancelled and the veredict of the Jury will be made adding the scoring of the rest of the members of the Jury.

14. The Jury, unanimously, has the power not to attribute prizes to the choirs that have not reached, at least, the following percentages:

15. The penalty for each minute out of the fixed time limit will be of 4 points.

16. The Closing Act is not taken into consideration with regard to the classification.

17. The decision of the Jury will not be subject to appeal and will be made public during the Closing Act.

18. Classification and qualification obtained will be sent to all participating choirs.

FINAL DISPOSITIONS

19. The Organization may record and video tape the performance in the Competition and the choirs are not allowed to claim any right of performance or image.

20. The Centre of Touristic Initiatives of Tolosa will be pleased to send any additional information regarding the interpretation of these rules and reserves the right to modify them if it would be advisable.

21. It is understood that each choir participating in the 38 TOLOSAL CHORAL CONTEST fully accepts and adheres to the rules and regulations of the Competition.
